Thanks to his mischievous friend Jeffrey, who’s begun dabbling in witchcraft, Micah has accidentally dosed his best friend Auggie with a love potion. Which might be fine, if Auggie wasn’t straight, and married, or if Auggie’s wife Sarah wasn’t pregnant, or a practicing witch. With the help of Duncan, who runs the local metaphysical supply store, the race is on to whip up the antidote before anyone does something they’ll regret.

Ryan, a young transgender man, is planning his future with his wife Melissa, when he gets a call that turns everything upside down: a diagnosis of ovarian cancer that has spread to the surrounding organs because of his delay in going to the doctor. Ryan struggles to decide what course of treatment to take. His best friend Jason wants Ryan to come out, use his diagnosis to do something good in the world but Ryan wants to keep things private. Into his orbit come his doctor Jen who is secretly married to Heather, the hospital chaplain. The relationship that really turns their lives upside down is between Ryan and Pam, an older conservative woman also recently diagnosed with cancer, who become unlikely friends. The Place That Made You

Virtual Reading - September 2021
Playwright: Darcy Parker Bruce  --  Director: Denzel Belin
Cast: Kyle Dekker, Ashley Hovell, Jamila Joiner, C. Michael Menge, Adán Varela

In The Place That Made You, transgender auto mechanic Jonah is having a bad month. Jonah’s childhood friend and protector Ben went off to war overseas but didn’t make it back. On the eve of Ben’s funeral, Ben’s father Bud informs Jonah that they’re about to become both jobless and homeless, because Bud wants to sell the garage and start a new life somewhere warm. Couch-surfing at Jonah’s friend (and ex-girlfriend) Emily’s place just seems to be making Emily’s shaky marriage to Brendan that much shakier. Add to that the recurring appearance of Ben’s wise-cracking ghost in unexpected places, and a curious white whale just off the coast of their small New England town of Piedmont, and Jonah’s complicated life is about to get a whole lot weirder.
