During the season of giving Threshold Theater is asking for your support.

When Threshold Theater launched in 2019, the Twin Cities was being served by three other queer theater companies as well – Gadfly Productions, 20% Theatre Company, and Uprising Theatre Company. Now at the end of 2021, Gadfly is on an indefinite pause, 20% is sunsetting operations, and Uprising has closed. The last 18 months has brought unprecedented changes just as Threshold is getting started.
Threshold’s mission to produce fresh LGBTQIA+ works for the theater means we’re committed to developing and producing the scripts of living LGBTQIA+ playwrights. Eight months ago, we put out a call for scripts and have thus far received more than 1,200 plays from over 700 playwrights. We made the decision to prioritize reading the works of BIPOC, female, transgender and non-binary writers first. We’ve processed 156 full-length scripts from BIPOC, female, transgender and non-binary playwrights thus far, moving on now to the one-acts and ten-minute plays.
In May, we launched an online new play readings series (as we all look forward to a day soon when we can gather safely together in person). The four bimonthly readings for 2021 (two local and two national writers) created work for 31 artists, 13 of whom were BIPOC, 8 were transgender or non-binary, and 8 were women. All artists collaborating with us on these projects were paid. We recently selected the lineup of five new play readings for 2022 (one local and four national writers; four women and one BIPOC male playwright). These five plays will create roles for 28 artists. With the second reading, in March 2022, we will begin live, in-person readings for an audience (with a follow-up video element for those unable to attend). Our venue partner, The Black Hart, is a neighborhood, queer, and soccer bar in the Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul.
We are setting early 2023 as our goal to bring our first full-length production onstage, “Spellbound,” a comedy with music, about the wrong way to use a love potion, written by local playwright Matthew A. Everett.
To do all this, and pay our artists, we need your help. We have set an ambitious goal of raising 14,350. A gift of any size is welcome to help us achieve this goal. As we begin soliciting funds from businesses and foundations, it helps to show support from members of the community. The majority of our support still comes from individual donors. The fact that you give is more important than the amount that you give.
Support LGBTQIA+ theater. Support artists & new plays. Support Threshold.

With your generous donation, we’ll be able to produce shows and pay artists for their work. As theater artists ourselves we know the hardship it can be when asked to do a show on a volunteer basis. Often it means passing up on unique opportunities in favor of a job with a paycheck. That's why we're grateful for any donations that support us, so we can in turn support the artists we work with.
